Ministers say the programme, developed in partnership with industry and education providers, will offer accessible training to people across all sectors — from manufacturing and healthcare to retail and public services.
The initiative reflects growing concern that rapid advances in AI could widen inequality if large sections of the workforce are left behind. By providing free training, the government hopes to ensure workers can adapt to technological change rather than be displaced by it.
Courses will range from basic AI literacy to more advanced technical modules, delivered through online platforms, further education colleges, and workplace-based learning. Employers will be encouraged to support staff participation, though the training will also be available to individuals outside formal employment.
Announcing the expansion, ministers said AI should be seen as “a tool to boost productivity, not a threat to livelihoods.” The government believes widespread upskilling will help businesses adopt new technologies more confidently while improving job security for workers.
Industry leaders have broadly welcomed the move, saying the UK risks falling behind international competitors if it fails to invest in digital skills. Many companies report difficulties recruiting staff with the right technical expertise, even as demand for AI-related roles continues to grow.
Trade unions have also expressed cautious support, while stressing the need for worker protections alongside training. “Skills are essential, but so are fair wages and job security,” one union representative said.
The programme comes amid increasing use of AI tools in everyday work, from automated scheduling and data analysis to customer service and content creation. While these technologies offer efficiency gains, they have also sparked debate over job losses and ethical concerns.
Government advisers say the training initiative is designed to complement wider reforms in education and lifelong learning, helping workers transition between roles as the economy evolves.
